WILKES-BARRE – Host King's College jumped out to a big lead early in the second half and withstood a furious Colonel run midway through the frame to post a 67-60 victory over Wilkes University Wednesday night at the Scandlon Gymnasium.
 
Wilkes drops to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in Freedom games. King's improves to 10-6 on the year, its fifth straight win, and 3-2 in league contests.
 
King's used an 11-0 run to open the second half to push its advantage to 45-26 with 17:42 on the clock. Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) scored six straight points on a quick 8-0 run from Wilkes as the Colonels trailed 52-42 with 9:57 left. A deep Stravinski three-pointer from the wing and one of two free throws from Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) brought the Colonels to within six, 52-46 with just over eight minutes remaining. King's was forced to stop the Colonel momentum on the next possession when Wizar drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key cutting the deficit to three, 52-49.
 
King's responded with a jumper and old-fashioned three-point play to up the lead back to nine 58-49 with five minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before two Stravinski free throws put the Colonels down seven 61-54 with 3:27 left.
 
A Lee Strause (Port Carbon, PA/Pottsville Nativity) bucket with 1:13 left brought Wilkes to within six 63-57, but King's made six straight free throws over the final minute of play to seal the conference victory.
 
King's held a 34-26 advantage at the half thanks to nine points from Hammonds. Wizar kept Wilkes in the contest offensively scoring 11 points including two treys in the first frame. The Colonels shot 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field in the first twenty minutes while King's made 14 field goals (45.2 percent) including four three-pointers in the opening stanza.
 
Stravinski led the Colonels with 19 points on 4-of-10 shooting from long range adding seven rebounds and two blocks. Wizar followed with 18 tallies and six caroms.
 
Five Monarchs reached double figures in the win led by Dan Rutecki's 14 points and six boards.
 
Wilkes next hosts FDU-Florham Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Marts Center. The 21st class of Wilkes Hall of Fame Inductees will be introduced at halftime of the contest.
