With the win Wilkes evens its overall mark at 6-6. PSU Wilkes-Barre drops to 8-5 on the year after the defeat. The Mountain Lions built their five point cushion in the first half thanks to the play of Keith Johnson and Kenneth Randall who accounted for 31 of PSU Wilkes-Barre's 45 points. The Colonels stormed out of the locker room using a quick 5-0 run to tie the game at 45 with 18:42 on the clock. A jumper from Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) followed by a deep trey from the sophomore sharpshooter got Wilkes going in the second frame. From there the Colonels took their first lead of the game as Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) scored in transition followed by another fast-break bucket from Steve Blish (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township). The teams traded baskets through the next eight minutes of play before a 6-0 spurt extended the Colonel advantage to ten, 74-64 with 4:14 left in the game. Two inside scores from Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) followed by an old fashioned three-point play from Jimmy Bracket gave Wilkes a cushion it would never relinquish late. Five Colonels reached double figures in a balanced offensive attack with Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) leading the way with a team-high 16 points, with all but one coming in the second half. Hinkel followed with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Wilkins added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Brackett enjoyed an outstanding all-around game posting 13 points, five rebounds, five blocks and four assists. Blish tallied a career-best 12 points including two treys. Wilkes held a decisive advantage on the glass, outrebounding PSU Wilkes-Barre 43-32 including 19 offensive caroms leading to 21 points. The Colonels return to Freedom Conference play next Wednesday hosting defending champion Delaware Valley College at 8:00 p.m. at the Marts Center. Print Friendly Version
