Men's Wrestling 12/6/2014 5:11:00 PM Wilkes Wrestling Takes Second at Messiah Petrofes; Oberrender Claims Heavyweight Crown (Full Results)Wilkes Wrestling Takes Second at Messiah Petrofes; Oberrender Claims Heavyweight Crown GRANTHAM, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team finished a strong showing at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational taking second place in the two-day event that concluded on Saturday afternoon. Wilkes finished with 154 total team points, just 7.5 points behind champion and No. 1 ranked UW Whitewater who finished with 161.5 points. The Colonels posted 17 more team points than third place and No. 2 Messiah College in the event. Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) led the list of Colonel finishers claiming the title at 285-pounds with five straight wins including two extra point victories along with way. He posted a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Messiah's Isaiah Shipman to reach the finals where the senior claimed the crown with another 3-2 decision win over Irakil Kakauridze of Springfield who upset No. 7 Anothony Edgren in the other semifinal bout. At 197-pounds, Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) arestled his way to second place falling to Shane Siefert of UW Whitewater in the final. Bach earned a 3-2 decision in the semifinals after posting a major decision and pin in his first two matches of the tournament. At 125-pounds, Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) finished third going 2-1 on day two action. After falling 3-1 in the semifinals, Rea wrestled his way through to the third place bout where he posted a 10-1 major decision win over Ursinus' Chris Tan. Wilkes saw two wrestlers finish in the top five at 133-pounds as Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) finished third and fifth respectively in the bracket. Grossmann fell in the semifinals eventual champion No. 3 Ryan O'Boyle of McDaniel before wrestling back to claim third place with a 5-3 decision over Alec Cotton of Mount Union. Fleck took a 6-1 decision win in his fifth place bout over Christian Hoogheem of Ursinus. Corey Fleming (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) was the Colonels lone place winner at 141-pounds, taking seventh after pinning David Colvin of Springfield in :48 in the seventh place bout. James Palys (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East) and Nicholas Racanelli (West Creek, NJ/Southern Regional) claimed top seven finishes at 149-pounds for Wilkes. Palys fell in the semifinals 5-3 before wrestling back to earn a spot in the third place bout with a 7-0 decision win over Racanelli. Palys would settle for fourth place after dropping a 5-1 decision to Isaiah Vela od UW Whitewater in the third place bout. Racanelli claimed fifth place with a 6-4 decision over Joey Schmidt of Baldwin Wallace in the fifth place bout. Sean Lomardi took home fourth place at 157-pounds using two straight decision wins (9-5 and 6-0) to reach the third place bout. Lombardi would fall 9-3 to No. 9 Messiah's Larry Cannon in the match. Mason McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Easton) was the lone place finisher for Wilkes at 165-pounds finishing in seventh place. McIntyre wrestled his way back through the consolation bracket three wins including a major decision (13-2) before receiving a medical forfeit for seventh place. At 174-pounds, James Ilvento (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) also took home seventh place pinning his opponent in 6:07 in the seventh place bout. Wilkes is idle until Sunday, December 28th when the Colonels host the 82nd annual Wilkes Open at the Marts Center.
