WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS SEASON FINALE AGAINST KING'S 72-57

WILKES-BARRE – Behind a game-high 25 points from Kyle Hammonds, visiting King's College posted a 72-57 victory over Wilkes University in both teams' Freedom Conference finale Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Wilkes finishes the 2013-14 season with an 8-16 overall mark going 3-11 in league games. King's season ends at 14-11, 7-7 in conference games.

King's built a 35-23 halftime advantage thanks to the hot shooting Hammonds who scored 13 of his 25 points in the opening frame. A King's layup and two subsequent Hammond free throws pushed the Monarchs lead to 15-8 with 11:48 on the clock. Wilkes responded cutting the deficit to six when Alex Wizar scored on a driving layup as King's continued to lead 23-17 with 6:04 left in the half.

An 8-0 run over the next five minutes extended the King's lead to 35-20 before Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) scored right before the halftime buzzer sounded for the Colonels as King's led by twelve at the break.

The Colonels cut the lead down to eight midway through the second half using two threes from Wizar and an old-fashioned three-point play from Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West). The teams traded buckets before King's used a 6-0 run to take a 63-48 lead with 7:20 remaining. From there the King's lead ballooned to as many as 21 points as the Monarchs held on for a sweep of the cross-town series.

Wizar was the lone Colonel to reach double figures finishing with 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting including three three-pointers. Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) followed with nine points and three blocks, while Furst added seven points and a game-high 12 boards.

Wilkes shot just 36.2 percent (21-58) from the floor and managed just 6-for-25 on long range attempts.

Hammonds finished 10-for-21 from the floor on way to his 25 points. Joe Caffrey contrinuted 11 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the win while Dan Rutecki chipped in 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

Wilkes says goodbye to six seniors including Wilkins, Furst, Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley), Craig Thomas (Avenel, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick), Steve Blish (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) and Mike Boylan (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls).
