DAVIDS, PA – After earning an extra-inning win in the series opener on Friday, the Wilkes University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Eastern University in the series finale doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Eastern took game one 4-3 before earning a 10-0 shutout win in game two. Wilkes falls to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference games after its three-game Freedom Conference series opener. Eastern improves to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in league games. In game one, Wilkes took an early lead when Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer)'s sacrifice fly scored Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) in the first. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second on a double steal with runners on first and third. Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) connected on his first home run as a Colonel in the top of the fourth giving Wilkes the lead back at 2-1. Eastern responded in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs, two coming on a two-run double from Tyler Orr. Wilkes added one run in the top of the sixth when Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) singled through the right side scoring Slocum to cut the deficit to one, but Eastern held on in the seventh to secure the victory. Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) went five innings allowing seven hits and four runs (one earned) recording the loss for the Colonels. In game two, Wilkes managed just three hits with two coming off the bat of Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic). Eastern had little trouble finding its rhythm at the plate scoring ten runs on 12 hits including a two-run homer from Orr in a five-run second inning. Barry Jost went five scoreless innings for Eastern to earn the win on the mound. Johnny Jan Jr, suffered the loss for Wilkes giving up eight hits and four earned runs.
