Box Score
WILKES BASEBALL FALLS 8-4 IN SERIES OPENER AT MANHATTANVILLE

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville College led 7-1 through six innings and held on late despite a Wilkes University rally to post an 8-4 victory over the Colonels Friday afternoon in the first game of the squads three-game set.

Wilkes slips to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in league play following the loss.

Manhattanville scored one run each in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. With Manhattanville leading 4-0 in the sixth, Wilkes' Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) doubled to left centerfield scoring Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) to put the Colonels on the board.

After Manhattanville scored three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, the Colonels attempted a comeback in the eighth scoring three runs to cut the deficit to four. Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) followed with a two-run single to right field to do the damage for Wilkes in the frame.

The comeback would fall short in the ninth as Manhattanville closed out the nine-inning victory with two strikeouts and a ground out back to the mound in the Colonels last at-bats.

Berg led the Wilkes offense finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Herbst and Ruch each added two of Wilkes' seven hits in the game. Ruch also received the loss on the mound going five innings allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Wilkes returns home Saturday hosting Manhattanville at 1:00 p.m. in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Artillery Park.
