WILKES BASEBALL FALLS TWICE IN FREEDOM DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST MANHATTANVILLE
 
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University baseball team could not stop the offensive firepower of visiting Manhattanville College dropping a pair of games to the Valiants at Artillery Park Saturday afternoon in Freedom Conference action. Manhattanville took game one 5-2 in a pitcher's duel before exploding for 16 runs in a 16-1 victory in game two.
 
Wilkes slips to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in league contests while Manhattanville improves to 12-10 and 6-6 in conference games. The Valiants jump over the Colonels for the fourth and final playoff spot with the three-game sweep.
 
Game one featured a pitching duel through the fifth inning as Wilkes starter Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and Manhattanville ace Alex Basso scattered three hits and one run each through five frames with the game tied at 1-1. Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) accounted for the RBI single to right field scoring Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) as the Colonels first run.
 
Manhattanville then found its rhythm on offense in the sixth scoring four runs to take a 5-1 advantage. An RBI double and single scored two of the four runs followed by another RBI single and double later in the inning.
 
Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh scoring Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) on the play, but the Colonels would get no closer falling 5-2.
 
Nixon went 5.1 innings allowing the five runs on nine hits while striking out three. Forrest Jordan (Sullivan County, PA/Sullivan County) pitched the final 1.2 innings not allowing a hit or run. Basso finished the complete game allowing two runs on five hits through seven innings striking out a season-high nine batters.
 
The Valiants scored three runs in the first and added 13 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to seal the game two victory. Manhattanville posted a season-best 20 hits in the game.
 
Wilkes' lone run came when James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) singled home Deep Patel (Dallas, PA/Dallas) in the bottom of the third.
 
Joe Pareres went all seven innings to record the win for Manhattanville allowing the one run on five hits. Wilkes used four pitchers in the contest with starter Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) receiving the loss going three innings allowing eight runs on eight hits.
 
Wilkes returns to Freedom play tomorrow (Sunday) hosting DeSales University in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Artillery Park.
