WILKES WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPENS UP FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAY WITH 22-10 WIN AT MANHATTANVILLE

 
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Wilkes women's lacrosse team opened up 2014 Freedom Conference play with a 22-10 win against the Valiants of Manhattanville on Wednesday afternoon

Wilkes continues their best start to a season by improving to 8-0 while going 1-0 in Freedom play.  Manhattanville falls to 1-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

With the score in favor of the Lady Colonels 4-3 with 16 minutes to play in the first half, Wilkes scored eight consecutive goals in a nine minute span to break the game open at 12-3.  Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) scored four of the goals while assisting on another.  Manhattanville did not shy away however as they responded with a quick four goal spurt of themselves and closed the Lady Colonels lead to 12-7 at the half.  Wilkes outshot Manhattanville in the first 23-15 and committed only two turnovers compared to ten for Manhattanville.

The Lady Colonels wasted little time in the second half going on the offense as they racked up seven consecutive goals within the first 14 minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 19-7   Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon), and Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) each scored two goals and had an assist during the 7-0 run.  Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka)'s sixth and final goal of the game gave Wilkes the final 22-10 score line.

Ford finished with eight points (6 G, 2 A), Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) chipped in with seven points (4 G, 3 A), while Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) each scored five goals on the afternoon.  Morgan Galluzzo (New London, NH/Kearsarge Regional) picked up the win in goal allowing 10 goals while making six saves.  For the game the Lady Colonels outshot the Valiants 42-22, while committing just four turnovers compared to 17 for Manhattanville.

Wilkes travels to King's College on Saturday for an important Freedom Conference game with the rival Lady Monarchs.  Game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
