WILKES BASEBALL FALLS TWICE AGAINST MISERICORDIA

EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Misericordia University used timely hitting and solid pitching to post a sweep of host Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park. The Cougars took game one 7-2 before posting a 12-4 victory in the nightcap.

Wilkes falls to 13-20 overall and ends its Freedom campaign with a 6-15 mark.

After Misericordia scored one run in the top of the first of game one, Wilkes tied the game in the bottom half when Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) hit an RBI single up the middle scoring James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono). The Colonels took the lead in the bottom of the second 2-1 as Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville)'s fielder's choice scored Deep Patel (Dallas, PA/Dallas) who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

From there it was all Misericordia as the Cougars scored two runs in the third to take back the advantage and added three more tallies in the fourth to seal the win. After allowing the two runs and two hits in the first two innings, Misericordia starter Tim Burek went the final four innings not allowing a run on two hits striking out four Colonel batters.

Ruch finished 2-for-2 to lead the Wilkes offense with one RBI. Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) suffered the loss on the mound going four innings allowing six runs on nine hits striking out three.

The Misericordia offense kept its rhythm going in game two scoring at least one run in six of the seven innings of play including a five-run sixth that broke open the contest.

Wilkes managed just one run through five innings as Ruch belted a long home run over the big blue monster in left field. Down12-2 entering the seventh, Bobby O'Keefe (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) connected on an RBI single and Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) added a sacrifice fly to cap off the Wilkes scoring.

Misericordia starter Corey Lee went six innings allowing two runs on five hits striking out five to record the victory. Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) pitched for Wilkes scattering seven hits and seven runs in five innings of work.

Ruch led the offense again in game two finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI.
