SCRANTON, PA – In what was a pitcher's duel through the eighth, the King's College baseball team posted four runs in the deciding ninth inning to secure a 7-1 victory over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at PNC Field.
 
Wilkes drops to 8-9 overall and 3-5 in league games while King's improves to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference contests.
 
King's opened with a 3-0 lead after seven innings using an RBI groundout, single and double in the second, fifth and seventh.
 
Wilkes responded with a run in the eighth as Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) singled home Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) to plate the Colonels lone run of the contest.
 
King's then used a sacrifice fly and two RBI doubles to push the lead to 7-1 in the four-run ninth inning.
 
Starter Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) pitched all but one out in the game (8.2 innings) allowing the seven runs on 12 hits while striking out three. King's starter Shawn Heck went all nine innings allowing the one run on seven hits while fanning three.
 
Ruch led the offense finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI. Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) also added two hits in the loss.
 
The teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at King's.
