BASEBALL SPLITS WITH KING'S: LOSE GAME ONE 6-1, WIN GAME TWO 12-1

WILKES-BARRE, PA –  After losing the first game of the doubleheader 6-1 the Colonels bounced back and the offense pounded out 12 hits as they won comfortably 12-1 in game two.

The Colonels now stand at 9-10 overall and 4-6 in Freedom Conference play, while King's improves to 3-9 and 2-6 in Freedom play.

In game one Wilkes jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead after Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) scored on a Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) fielder's choice in which King's was unable to complete a double-play allowing Reese to score all the way from second on the throwing error.  King's scored four runs in the bottom of the 3rd to open up a 4-1 lead.  Wilkes had a costly error with two outs in the inning that helped extend the inning for the Monarchs.  King's loaded the bases with a walk after the error and Anthony Lizzi provided the big blow for the Colonels as he cleared the bases with a triple to right center that scored three runs, all of which were unearned on starting pitcher Pat Condo's stat line.

In the bottom of the 6th inning two more Colonel errors led to two Monarchs runs that stretched the lead to the final score of 6-1.  Wilkes offense was stymied throughout the game as they were only able to muster up three hits.  Reese reached based three times and scored the lone run while Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) collected one hit a piece.  Condo picked up the loss allowing four runs (one earned) and four hits in three innings of work.

Unlike game one where the Colonels bats could not get going, game two saw the Colonels pound out 12 hits and 12 runs as they salvaged the split on the afternoon.  King's took a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the first on a Lizzi single to left that scored Tim Zaccone.  From the top of the third inning on it was all Wilkes as they put together four consecutive innings of scoring at least one run.  Wilkes took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd when they scored two runs on a Pisanchyn single to third base and a Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) fielder's choice.

Wilkes stretched the lead to 3-1 in the top of the 4th inning when Deep Patel (Dallas, PA/Dallas) doubled to right center scoring Schappell.  The top of the 5th was when Wilkes did their big damage as they put a seven spot up on the board extending the lead to 10-1.  Marino had a run scoring double, and Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) hit a two run double to left for two of the big hits in the inning.  Four of the runs in the inning were fueled by a two-out error by the King's shortstop that helped to extend the inning.  In the top half of the 6th Reese hit a two RBI single to left that scored Leaf and Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist)

Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) pitched a masterful six innings as he allowed one earned run and four hits in six innings of work.  He struck out six Monarchs batters and walked one in picking up his second win of the season.  Eight of the nine Colonels starters collected a hit in the second game.  Reese went 3-for-5 with three RBI's, and two runs scored.  Pisanchyn picked up three hits as well while knocking in a pair of runs.

Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Annville, Pa for a 3:30 first pitch start against Lebanon Valley in non-conference play.
