Steve Finkernagel Sara Gilbert scored a career best two goals vs. FDU-Florham on Wednesday LADY COLONELS LACROSSE DROPS FIRST GAME OF SEASON 4/9/2014 9:45:00 PM Box Score LADY COLONELS LACROSSE DROPS FIRST GAME OF SEASON EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team saw their perfect season come to an end at the hands of FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon, as the Devils defeated the Lady Colonels 16-13 in Freedom Conference play. With the loss Wilkes snaps their program record 9-0 start and fall to 9-1 overall 2-1 in the Freedom Conference. FDU-Florham improves to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in Freedom play. Wilkes fell behind 3-0 five minutes into the game as the Devils scored three unassisted goals. Wilkes clawed back into the game with a pair of goals from Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) and Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka). As quickly as Wilkes scored their goals Devils' Joelle Manganella scored two goals less than :30 seconds later to extend the lead to 5-2 for FDU-Florham. Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) got a goal back for Wilkes before FDU-Florham responded with two more goals of their own extending the lead to 7-3. At the 11:59 minute mark of the first half Sara Gilbert (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) scored a goal for the Lady Colonels to trim the lead down to three. With under four minutes to go in the first half, FDU-Florham scored back-to-back goals to put them up 9-4 before Ford scored a goal for Wilkes with under :10 seconds remaining in the half. Wilkes trailed 9-5 at the half and 15-13 in total shots. Wilkes came out on fire to start the second half scoring five straight goals within the first 10 minutes of the half to take their first lead of the game at 10-9. Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon) scored two of the goals while Brownsey scored off a feed from Smith to give the Lady Colonels the outright lead. Manganella scored her 5th goal of the game to tie the game at 10-10 sparking a 4-0 run that put FDU-Florham back up 13-10 with 11:17 remaining in the game. Smith brought Wilkes back within one goal at 13-12 when she scored goals :15 seconds apart, including a goal being a player down. FDU-Florham stymied another Wilkes rally scoring three consecutive goals within a three-minute span to put the game away. Brownsey scored with 3:18 to play cutting the Devils lead to 16-13 but that was all the closer Wilkes would get to pulling off the comeback win. Wilkes outshot FDU-Florham 32-23 for the game and committed less turnovers 17 to 18. Wilkes also dominated the draw controls with 21 wins compared to FDU's 10. Smith tallied six points for Wilkes (3 G, 3 A) while Ford and Brownsey each scored three goals. Morgan Galluzzo (New London, NH/Kearsarge Regional) made five saves in goal for the Lady Colonels while Grace Warburton made 11 for the Devils. Wilkes looks to get back into the winning column when they travel to Freedom Conference foe Arcadia University on Saturday in Glenside, Pa.
