Wilkes Basketball Squads Travel to DeSales Wednesday for Freedom Doubleheader

WILKES-BARRE – With four Freedom Conference games left on the schedule, both Wilkes University basketball squads are in contention for a postseason berth as the teams travel to DeSales University Wednesday night in a league doubleheader.

The women's game tips at 6:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa. with the men's contest to follow at 8:00 p.m.

The Wilkes women enter the game with a 9-10 overall record standing 4-6 in league play following a 73-63 victory against Misericordia University on Saturday. The win earned the Lady Colonels a season sweep of their local rivals. Wilkes now stands one game out of the final postseason berth trailing Delaware Valley and King's with games against each in the next two weeks.

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) tops the squad offensively averaging 16.5 points and 3.1 rebounds. Stambone has connected on a team-high 32 three-pointers while shooting 71.4 percent from the charity stripe. The senior sharp shooter stands just 122 points away from breaking the school's all-time scoring mark set by Diane Kendig (1,671 points) in 1981.

Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) follows with 10.6 points and a team-best 7.7 rebounds playing in 16 games this season. Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) add 9.4 points and 8.7 points respectively to add depth to the Lady Colonels lineup.

Wilkes is averaging 64.0 points per-game while allowing 68.2 points per contest. Wilkes dropped a 56-41 decision to DeSales in the teams' first meeting back on January 21 at the Marts Center.

The DeSales women own a 12-9 overall record standing 6-4 in league play currently in third place among the league standings. The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a 71-64 victory at Delaware Valley on Saturday.

Morgan McCollian is DeSales top threat offensively averaging 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. Megan Baird follows with 11.0 points on a team-high 41 three-pointers made. Alex Suk comes off the bench to score 4.7 points and grab 5.3 rebounds.

DeSales averages 63.5 points per-game while yielding 61.3 points per contest.

The Wilkes men enter the game with a 10-11 overall record and a 5-5 league mark after falling to Misericordia University 79-77 at the Marts Center on Saturday. Wilkes currently sits tied for the fourth and final postseason spot with both Eastern and King's with four games remaining on the schedule.

Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) tops the Colonel offense averaging 15.1 points and 3.4 rebounds including 62 made treys. Fellow sharp shooter Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) adds 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds connecting on a team-best 65 three-pointers. Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) add 11.1 points and 10.0 points respectively from the power forward and point guard spots.

Wilkes averages 72.5 points per game while allowing 71.7 points a contest. Wilkes dropped an 82-71 decision to DeSales in the squads' earlier meeting this season at the Marts Center.

The DeSales men own a 15-6 overall record standing 7-3 in league play sitting in third place in the Freedom Conference after falling on a half-court buzzer beater shot at Delaware Valley 77-74 on Saturday.

Cody Deal tops the squad averaging 16.7 points and 5.6 rebounds. Brian Laird follows with 11.5 points and 1.6 assists connecting on a team-high 51 treys this season. Michael Guldin and Aaron Burton average 11.4 and 10.5 points respectively to add depth to the strong DeSales lineup.

The Bulldogs average 71.8 points per-game while yielding 66.7 points per contest.
