Wilkes Softball Splits Pair of Games on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University softball team split a pair of games on its final day of its spring break trip Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels fell 17-0 in five innings to Indiana Wesleyan before holding on for a 5-4 victory over Anna Maria in its second contest of the day.

Wilkes moves to 4-4 overall following the five-day trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) and Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) led the Wilkes bats against Indiana Wesleyan in a lop-sided affair with two hits each. Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) went 3.1 innings in the circle allowing ten hits while walking nine batters giving up the 17 earned runs.

Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning against Anna Maria thanks to an RBI single from Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) and bases-loaded walk drawn by Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Cumbo reached on an error by the pitcher scoring Bixler on the play to cap the Lady Colonels scoring in the inning.

After Anna Maria tied the game with three runs in the third, Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) added a sacrifice fly RBI and Gambine reached on another error scoring Grace Sanzalone (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingstone) to give Wilkes the lead back at 5-3.

Anna Maria added one run in the seventh, but Gambino entered in relief of starter Kim Jones (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) to pick up the save recording the final three outs. Jones went six innings allowing four hits and three runs while striking out four.

Wilkes is back in action Wednesday barring the weather traveling to the University of Scranton for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
