Wilkes Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Second Round with 5-0 Win Over Grove City

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 victory over Grove City in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships Thursday morning on the campus of Mary Washington University.

With the win Wilkes improves to 20-2 overall and extends its match win streak to ten straight dating back to April 11.

In doubles play, the Colonels opened the match with a win at No. 3 pairs as Max Appello (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and Michael Kranz (Depew, NY/Lancaster Central) scored an 8-5 win. Steven Wilson (Bronx, NY/JFK) and Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) made it 2-0 Wilkes taking the No. 2 doubles contest 8-5. The brother duo of Dominic Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and Jacob Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) made it a clean sweep for Wilkes going 9-7 to take No. 1 pairs.

From there, Wilson collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles and Troy Haas (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 6 to propel the Colonels into the second round of the postseason tournament.

Wilkes will now face Trinity (Texas) on Friday in the second round in a match scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Trinity (17-8) received a bye in the first round.
