Box Score 2 Softball Ends Spring Trip with Two Close Losses
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –The Wilkes University softball team finished its spring break trip in South Carolina with a pair of close losses, falling to Medaille College 2-0 in the morning before dropping a 3-2 decision to St. Joseph's-Long Island in the afternoon.
The Lady Colonels are now 4-4 on the season.
In the first game, Medaille took the lead in the bottom of the first on two errors, a passed ball, and a single to make the score 1-0. The Mavericks added another run in the top of the third on a double, walk, and single to finish the scoring.
Wilkes sophomore starting pitcher
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) threw a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The Lady Colonels put the ball in play, finishing the game with only two strikeouts, but were unable to get to Medaille's starter, notching only two hits.
In this afternoon's game against St. Josephs-Long Island, Wilkes plated their two runs in the top of the first when sophomore
Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) reached on a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. Junior
Mikala Strum (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union) followed with a single to put runners on first and third, and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for junior
Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford), who came through with a two-run single to give the Lady Colonels a 2-0 lead.
St. Joseph's tied the game in the bottom of the third on two hits, and took the lead in the fourth on an error and two singles.
Sophomore pitcher
Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) went 3.1 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits to take the loss.
Wilkes returns to action next Saturday the 19
th when it will host Eastern University in the first MAC Freedom doubleheader of the season beginning at 1 p.m.
