MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Wilkes University men's tennis team extended its program record for single season wins notching its 23^rd victory of the season when the Colonels opened the 2016 NCAA Championship Tournament with a 5-0 decision over Hunter College at Middlebury.
 
Wilkes moves to 23-2 overall on the year while Hunter concluded its season with a 12-4 mark.
 
The match began with doubles play where Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Max Appello (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and Michael Kranz (Depew, NY/Lancaster Central) opened with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 pairs, the brother duo of Dominic Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and Jacob Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored an 8-4 win before Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Adam Lefkandinos (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) clinched the sweep of doubles matches with an 8-4 victory.
 
Murphy then notched Wilkes' fourth win of the match with a 6-0, retired decision at the top spot before Appello clinched the Colonels second straight first round NCAA win with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory.
 
Wilkes will play host Middlebury College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.
