Wilkes Men's Tennis Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament with 5-0 Win Over Hunter
MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Wilkes University men's tennis team extended its program record for single season wins notching its 23
rd victory of the season when the Colonels opened the 2016 NCAA Championship Tournament with a 5-0 decision over Hunter College at Middlebury.
Wilkes moves to 23-2 overall on the year while Hunter concluded its season with a 12-4 mark.
The match began with doubles play where Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Max Appello (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and
Michael Kranz (Depew, NY/Lancaster Central) opened with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 pairs, the brother duo of
Dominic Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and
Jacob Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored an 8-4 win before
Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and
Adam Lefkandinos (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) clinched the sweep of doubles matches with an 8-4 victory.
Murphy then notched Wilkes' fourth win of the match with a 6-0, retired decision at the top spot before Appello clinched the Colonels second straight first round NCAA win with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory.
Wilkes will play host Middlebury College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.
