Wilkes Softball Continues Winning Streak with Two More Victories Tuesday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University continued its impressive start of the 2017 season winning two more games pushing their opening win streak to four games as the Lady Colonels posted a 4-0 victory over Medaille College and a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Hilbert College in the day's second game Tuesday afternoon.

Wilkes improved to 4-0 on the season following the pair of victories.

In the 4-0 win over Medaille, the Lady Colonels received another strong pitching performance from freshman Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) who posted six strikeouts pitching all seven innings to record her second straight shutout. Stauton also helped herself at the plate connecting on an RBI triple scoring Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) who led the team at the plate going 2-for-3.

Wilkes opened game two against Hilbert with a 1-0 lead after three innings thanks to Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East)'s RBI double scoring Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton). Hilbert scored three runs in the sixth before Wilkes began its furious comeback in the seventh trailing 3-1. Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) began the inning with a single followed by another base hit from Podlesney. Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) reached on a hard hit ball to shortstop where the throw got away scoring Mia Lussier (Somerset, MA/Somerset Berkley) from third who pinch ran for Gibson on the play. After Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Birchmeier came up big again singling up the middle scoring Kaliyah Moore (South Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) to tie the game and Paskas to cross the plate for the Wilkes victory.

Podlesney posted her second consecutive win in the circle going all seven innings striking out four.

Wilkes is idle tomorrow with an off day before returning to action Thursday with games against Grove City College at 1:30 p.m. and Ursinus College at 5:30 p.m.
