Wilkes Wrestling Falls at #6 Ithaca 35-11

ITHACA, N.Y. – Host No. 6 Ithaca College scored wins in seven of ten bouts including six extra-point victories on way to a 35-11 decision over Wilkes University Friday night.

Wilkes saw its eight match win streak come to a halt falling to 18-4 overall in duals this season. Ithaca, ranked sixth in the latest NWCA team rankings, improved to 10-4 overall.

Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson), Ashton Gyenizs (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) and Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) were the three Colonel winners at 149-pounds, 174-pounds  and 197-pounds respectively.

After falling behind 2-0 early in the match, Medrow proved too much for Anthony Palmiotto as the bout continued. Medrow dominated the third period with several four-point near falls to pull away for an 18-2 technical fall.

Gyenizs earned Wilkes' second victory of the night in one of the more entertaining bouts of the evening. Gyenizs carried a 3-0 advantage into the final period, but Ithaca's rookie Eze Chukwuezi battled back to tie things up at 4-4 with a pair of takedowns. Choosing a neutral restart that made the score 5-4 in favor of Gyenizs, the senior was able to hold off the Bombers' grappler in a 5-4 decision.

Wilkes picked up one final victory on the night at 197-pounds, as Almeky was able to edge past Dymir Davis-Carruth for a 4-3 decision. After trailing 2-1 early, a second period Ithaca escape widened the edge to 3-1. Almeky would score a takedown just before the second-period horn to level the score at 3-3. With Almeky choosing down to begin the third period, Davis-Carruth conceded the escape to trail for the first time at 4-3 where Almeky used strong defense to hold off several shots to maintain the decision win.

Wilkes returns to the mat Sunday with a dual match against cross-town rival King's College at 12:00 p.m. in the Scandlon Gymnasium.
