Wilkes Women's Tennis Finishes Stevens Invitational Strong

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ – The Wilkes University women's tennis team completed competition at the Stevens Invitational with doubles action on Sunday. The Colonels picked up eight wins in nine matches.

The Colonels opened the day going 3-1 in four matches with the host Stevens. Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) and Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) combined to defeat Audrey Heaberlin and Agatha Malinowski by an 8-5 score. Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) and Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) defeated Isabella Calandra and Alexis Fuda, 8-3. Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) and Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) was the other duo to win as they took care of Gabriella Tantillo and Joilin Gomez by an 8-4 score.

In the second round of action the Colonels picked up four wins against duos from Bryn Mawr College and another against Stevens. This time Varela-Seri and Saliyev combined to defeat Audrey Camacho and Skylar Korman of BMC, 8-3. Yakhnis and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) picked up a tight 8-7 (7-3) victory over Caroline Horvatits and Libby Hemp on BMC. Markle and Thomas defeated their opponents in Christina Xue and Francesca Caramazza from BMC by an 8-1 score. Malone and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) edged by Tantillo and Juliette Marchisio of Stevens 8-7 (7-6).

Zielinski and Thomas combined to defeat the duo of Marchisio and Gomez from Stevens 8-6 in the only match that the Colonels participated in during the final round of action on the day.

Wilkes returns to the court on Thursday to start play at the ITA Regionals in Fredericksburg, Va. Play at the University of Mary Washington will run through Sunday.
