FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team completed action on day one of the ITA Southeast Regional Women's Championship on Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va. hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) in the D Singles bracket and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) in the E Singles bracket each won twice Saturday to advance to semifinal matchups on Sunday. The duo of Cieri and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) also won twice to reach the C Doubles bracket semifinals tomorrow.

Markle defeated Kelsi Mentzer of Stevenson 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 of the D Singles bracket and followed that up by beating Alden Grosh of St. Mary's in the quarterfinals by a 6-0, 6-1 margin. Markle will face Clara Farrehi of Haverford in the semifinals on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a chance to advance to the finals.

Cieri started the day by beating Bailey Livingston of Randolph 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16 and then won by an identical score in the quarterfinals against Taelor Brown of Stevenson. Cieri is set to face Makenna Sargis of Stevens at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in the E Singles bracket semifinals.

Cieri and Zielinski started their C Doubles run with an 8-7(5) victory over Rachel Crawford and Malena Hoover of Bridgewater in the round of 16. The Wilkes duo then downed Sarah Dover and Katherine Tamesis of Salisbury 8-2 in the quarterfinals. Cieri and Zielinski are set to play Sarah Everson and Ananya Prakash of Haverford in the semifinals at 8:45 a.m. Sunday.

In the Championship Singles bracket, Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) defeated Hayley Bidwell of Franklin & Marshall 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 64. Saliyev then was defeated by Anjali Kashyap of Johns Hopkins by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the round of 32.

Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) also competed in a round of 64 Championship Singles match but fell in straight sets to Lauren James of Carnegie Mellon. She will play at 12:00 p.m. Sunday in the consolation round of 32.

Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) won her round of 16 match in the C Singles bracket over Sarah Mueller of Randolph 6-1, 6-0 before falling to Tamesis of Salisbury in a hard fought match 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(3) in the quarterfinals.

Zielinski also won her first round match in the C Singles bracket. She defeated Aubrey Chambers of Lycoming 6-1, 6-1. In the quarterfinals Zielinski lost 6-4, 6-0 to Hannah Baxter of Salisbury.

In the Championship Doubles bracket the team of Markle and Saliyev lost in the round of 32 to Emma Kassan and Christina Wang of Swarthmore by an 8-3 score. The duo will play in the consolation round of 16 at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The team of Yakhnis and Varela-Seri fell in the round of 16 of the B Doubles bracket to Ashton Jenne and Valerie Marshall of Washington & Lee. They will play in the consolation quarterfinals at 8:00 a.m. Sunday.
