Cieri and Zielinski Make History with ITA Southeast Regional Championships for Wilkes Women's Tennis

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) made history on Sunday for the Wilkes University women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Women's Championship in Fredericksburg, Va. hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Cieri became just the second Colonel from the women's team to win a singles championship at the event as she claimed the E Singles title with two victories on Sunday. Cieri also made Wilkes women's tennis history on the doubles side as she teamed with Zielinski to become the first Colonels duo to win an ITA championship. Cieri and Zielinski won two times on Sunday to claim the C Doubles title.

Cieri advanced through her Sunday semifinal match with a walkover against an opponent from Stevens. The sophomore then battled hard in the E Singles Final against Claire Johnson of Haverford. Cieri won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 2-6. In the decisive tiebreak Cieri earned the championship by winning 10-6. Cieri joins Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) (E Singles – 2018) as the only Colonels to win ITA singles titles.

In C Doubles action the team of Cieri and Zielinski picked up where they left off on Saturday. The duo dispatched Sarah Evenson and Ananya Prakash of Haverford in the semifinals by an 8-6 score. Cieri and Zielinski then made history by defeating Lauren Apple and Sarah Mueller of Randolph by an 8-3 score in the finals to claim the championship.

Cieri finished the ITA Southeast Regional with a perfect 8-0 record to claim two titles.

In other action for the Colonels on Sunday, Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) lost her D Singles bracket semifinal match to Clara Farrehi of Haverford 6-2, 6-1. Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) lost her Championship Singles consolation match to Clara March of Franklin & Marshall 8-7(0).

In the Doubles Championship consolation bracket the team of Markle and Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) dropped an 8-1 decision to Ana-Clara Borga and Reagan Delp of Christopher Newport. Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) and Varela-Seri fell in their B Doubles consolation match against the Sweet Briar duo of Katica Kotany and Allison Wandling by a score of 8-3.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday to start play in the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Championships at the Ralston Athletic Complex and Kirby Park courts.
