Wilkes Women's Tennis Completes Day One of MAC Individual Tournament

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team completed the first day of the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Tournament, with six players still alive in singles play and three pairs making it to day two in doubles.

In No. 1 singles, third-seeded Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) defeated Annie Rakos of DeSales 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before besting Hannah Summerson of Lycoming 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals, where she will face second-seeded Agatha Malinowski of Stevens tomorrow.

At No. 3 singles, second-seeded Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) earned a first-round bye before defeating Madi Heller of Lycoming 6-0, 6-0 to advance to a semifinal matchup with third-seeded Kayla Dello Iacono of FDU-Florham tomorrow.

At No. 4 singles, top-seeded Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) got to the quarterfinals with a bye before defeating Abby Connors of DeSales 6-2, 6-4 to move on to tomorrow's semifinals, where she will face fourth-seeded Emily Wilczek of Lebanon Valley.

In No. 5 singles, top-seed Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) earned a first-round bye before upending Kayla Rembish of Misericordia 6-1, 6-2, moving onto the semifinals where she will face fourth-seeded Meridyth Sanders of Lebanon Valley tomorrow.

At No. 6 singles, top-seeded Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) took advantage of a first-round bye before defeating Erin Weller of FDU-Florham 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Thomas will face fourth-seeded Nicole Badalyan of Stevens tomorrow when play resumes.

Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) defeated Brooke Dorsey of FDU-Florham 6-1, 6-1 in the first round at No. 7 singles before eliminating Cody Young of King's who had a first-round bye, 6-0, 6-1. Malone will face Kelsey Kazlaukas of DeSales tomorrow in the semifinals.

In doubles play, the top-seed pair of Varela-Seri and Yakhnis earned a first-round bye in the No. 1 flight before defeating Tess Weber and Julia Paraboschi of Arcadia 8-4. The duo will face the fourth-seed of Megan Carter and Skylar Wright of Hood when play resumes in the semifinals.

At No. 2 doubles, the team of Markle and Zielinski enjoyed a break in the first round before eliminating Arcadia's Cassandra Boldt and Maeghan Myers 8-1. They will face Nicole Honrade and Madison Poladian, the fourth seed, in the semifinals.

At No. 3 doubles, Malone and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned a bye in the first round as the No. 2 seed, and bested Nicole Fox and Olivia Gorman 8-3 in the quarterfinals, and will go against the No. 3 seed of DeSales' Alex Rodier and Abby Connors in the semifinals.

Play will resume with the semifinals and championship rounds starting tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
