Wilkes Women's Tennis 13-2 On Opening Day of 2021 MAC Individual Championship

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team completed day one action on Saturday at the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Tournament with a 13-2 overall record across singles and doubles competition. The Colonels will compete in eight semifinal matches tomorrow at the Kirby Park and Ralston Athletic Complex courts.

In singles action six of the seven Colonel participants advanced to the semifinal round, going 10-1 overall on the day.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) defeated Lauren China of Albright 8-1 in the opening round and then dispatched No. 4 seed Meredith Haas of Lebanon Valley 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 to advance to the semifinal round where she will meet No. 1 seed Audrey Heaberlin of Stevens Institute of Technology.

Sophomore Cassidy Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) was a double winner at No. 3 singles to move into the semifinal round. The No. 2 seed defeated Hailey Loughlin of Misericordia 6-2, 6-4 in the first round and then beat Jackie Costello of King's 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Greenman faces Rebekah Scheaffer of Messiah in the semifinals tomorrow.

Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) won her No. 4 singles opening round match 6-0, 6-0 over Samantha Zudov of Stevenson. The senior then beat Nyah Tomlinson of DeSales 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seed will face Rachel Rineer of Alvernia in the semifinals.

First year Theresa Amerise (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer) made her Wilkes debut with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Alexandria Kramer of Stevenson in the quarterfinals of the No. 5 singles bracket after receiving an opening round bye as the No. 2 seed. She will face No. 3 seed Cassandra Benderavich of Misericordia in the semifinals.

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) defeated Abbey DeLisio of Lebanon Valley in the first round, 7-5, 6-2. She then beat Tatum Marino of Arcadia 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to set a match against No. 2 seed Hannah Olson of Messiah in the semifinal round.

First year Sydney Farmer (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) received an opening round bye and then won her Wilkes debut 6-2, 6-4 over Emily Johannan of Stevens in a quarterfinal. Farmer will face Rachel Dougherty of Messiah in the semifinals.

Senior Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) had a tough draw at No. 1 singles as she faced top-seeded Brianna Pizzano of Misericordia in the opening round. Pizzano took the match 6-2, 6-1.

Two of the three Colonels doubles teams are still alive heading into the semifinals tomorrow.

At No. 1 doubles, the third-seeded pairing of Yakhnis and Klein defeated Agatha Malinowski and Isabella Dona of Stevens 8-6 in the opening round. The duo then defeated Alvernia's Leah Bouchard and Jill Loughman, 8-2. Yakhnis and Klein will face No. 2 seed Elsa Ostermaker and Lauren Ostermann of York (Pa.) in the semifinals.

Second seeded at No. 3 doubles, the team of Amerise and O'Neil received a first round bye before winning in the quarterfinals by an 8-3 score over Alyssa Vandenberge and Hope Hoppe of DeSales. They are set to face DeLisio and Kendall Halsey of Lebanon Valley in the semifinals.

Greenman and Cieri, the top seed at No. 2 doubles, were upset in the quarterfinals after an opening round bye. Brianna Rohrer and Morrissey Walsh of York (Pa.) won the tight match 8-6.

Action resumes tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with the semifinal round of doubles. The semifinal round of singles will follow. Then it is on to the singles finals before the doubles finals wrap up action at the 2021 MAC Individual Championship.
