No. 3 Wilkes Women's Tennis Set to Face No. 2 Misericordia in MAC Freedom Semifinal
WILKES-BARRE – The third-seeded Wilkes University women's tennis team is set to travel to Dallas, Pa. to take on second-seeded Misericordia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Semifinal match on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed by rain. Wilkes is looking to add another conference championship to its resume as the Colonels look for their 15th title in program history as the No. 3 seed this year. The Colonels earned the third seed after going 5-2 in MAC Freedom matches this season while holding a 6-6 overall record.
Misericordia earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-1 conference record as the Cougars went 12-6 this season.
The Colonels suffered a 7-2 loss to the Cougars on April 18th at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
In that match, Wilkes won in No. 2 doubles as
Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) and
Cassidy Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) had an 8-2 victory over Lydia Barbour and Hailey Loughlin. Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker had an 8-3 win over
Tea Amerise (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer) and
Sydney Farmer (Lacey Township, NJ/Lacey Township) in No. 1 doubles while Teresa Thomas and Cassie Benderavich got the victory in the No. 3 doubles spot 8-3 over
Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and
Karlee Yuscavage (Hanover Twp., PA/Hanover Area).
Wilkes had one victory in the singles spot, as Greenman won in the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-3 over Brecker.
Misericordia had wins in the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 spots on that day. Pizzano defeated Amerise at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2, Barbour beat Klein at No. 3 6-1, 6-3, Loughlin defeated O'Neil at No. 4 6-0, 6-0, Erin Cridge won over Farmer at No. 5 8-2, and Lauren Visalli defeated Yuscavage at No. 6 8-5.
The Colonels are 25-1 against Misericordia dating back to the 2007-08 season. This year Wilkes have a combined 42-42 singles record and a 22-20 doubles record. The Cougars have combined to have a 69-33 singles record and a 32-19 doubles record.
Top-seeded and reigning MAC Freedom women's tennis champions Stevens Institute of Technology hosts fourth seed Lycoming College in the other semifinal match on Wednesday at Braddock Park in North Bergen, N.J. The winners of each semifinal will meet in the MAC Freedom Championship match on Saturday at the highest remaining seed. The conference champion will receive an NCAA automatic berth to the Division III Tournament, something the Colonels have made in 14 of the last 15 years.
