Wilkes Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Southeast Regionals at Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team traveled to Mary Washington University to compete at the 2023 ITA Southeast Regionals on Friday and Saturday.
In B2 singles play,
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) fell in his opening match 8-4 against Jake Vo of Washington and Lee. He then finished up in the consolation round losing 6-2, 6-4 to John Riordan of Mary Washington.
In B4 singles play,
Nathanial Rathe (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln Southeast) fell in a thrilling 8-7 (8-6) opening round match. He then recorded a 6-0, 6-1 straight set victory in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Rathe then took the consolation final with a straight set 6-3, 6-4 win over William Shepherd Johnson of Saint Mary College of Maryland.
In B1 doubles bracket, the duo of Rathe and Guzman fell 8-7 (7-3) in their opening round match to Virginia Wesleyan's Tudor Vlad and Francis Cabaddu. The pair finished up play in the consolation quarterfinals losing 8-2 to a team from Averett University.
In B2 double splay, Wilkes'
Robert Riley (Louisville, KY/Xavier) and
Sebastian Sylvester (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago/The College of Lady Fatima) dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Dillon McReynolds and Casey Coffey of Hampden-Sydney College in the opening round. The duo then recorded an 8-5 victory over Stevenson's Nathan Davidson and Garrett Warren in the consolation semifinals. They closed out play with a win in the consolation final with a 8-7 (7-3) decision over Bridgewater's Mark Gordon and Bryce Cline.
The team will remain idle until they begin Landmark Conference play Saturday, October 21 with a road dual match at Susquehanna University at 1:00 p.m.
