Wilkes Basketball Hosts Catholic in Saturday Homestand

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting Catholic on Saturday, November 24. The women will tip off at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m. for their home opener.

Men's Preview

The Colonels look to continue their impressive start to the season, as they are coming off a 58-48 win over Scranton on Wednesday night. They are currently 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, leaving them sitting at the top of the conference.

Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton) leads the team in points and is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 26.0 points per game, followed by Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) with a 13.0 average. Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) and Eli Becker (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) round out the double digit point averages with 11.5 and 10.3. Lesko and Becker are tied for the lead in rebounds with 29 apiece, averaging 7.3 per game, ranking them third and fourth in the conference. Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) follows closely with 26 total rebounds, averaging 6.5 per game. 

The Wilkes offense is averaging 78.3 points per game and are shooting .449 from the field. The team has the fourth highest three point shot percentage in the conference, shooting .323 from beyond the arc. Lesko is sitting fifth in the conference in field goal percentage, at .529. Merrifield is ranked second in the conference in assists, with 20 total and averaging 5 per game.

Catholic will be entering the matchup with a 3-1 overall record and a 1-0 conference record, leaving them ranked second in the conference, behind Wilkes. The Cardinals most recently won their conference opener against Elizabethtown by a score of 89-71.

Sean Neylon leads the Cardinals in points at 67, averaging 16.8 per game. Brian Herbert follows with 58 points on the season and an average of 14.5 points per game. Jamie Ntiamoah leads the Landmark in rebounds, totaling 34 and averaging 8.5 per game, and sits in second in the conference in steals with 13 so far this season and an average of 3.3 per game. 

Catholic is currency sitting in fourth in the conference in offense, averaging 80.8 points per game. Neylon is currently ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage, tied with Lesko at .529. Dan Buckley leads the team and is sixth in the conference in assists with 15 on the season, and averaging 3.8 per game.
 

Women's Preview

The Colonels enter this game with a 0-4 overall record and 0-1 in conference play, coming off a loss to Scranton on Wednesday night. 

Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the team in points, with 75 total and an average of 15.0 per game, leaving her sitting seventh in the conference in scoring. Matos also leads in rebounds with an average of 4.8 per game and is closely followed by Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) who is averaging 4.6 per game. Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) and Matos are tied for the lead in assists with five each and are averaging 1.0 per game.

Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) leads the team in steals with 10 on the season and an average of 3.3 per game. Robel and Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) each lead the team in blocks with four total so far this season.

Matos leads in field goal percentage, with a .621 percentage and an average of 3.6 field goals made per game. She also leads in three point field goals with a .250 shooting percentage. 

As a team, the Colonels are averaging a .252 shooting percentage from the field and a .189 percentage from beyond the arc. Wilkes is also averaging 33.4 rebounds per game as well as 4.8 assists.

Catholic women' basketball are currently sitting on a 3-1 record overall and are 0-1 in conference play. They are most recently coming off a 69-73 loss to Elizabethtown on Wednesday night. 

Anna Scoblick leads the Cardinals in points with 57 on the season and averaging 14.3 points per game. She is closely followed by Keegan Douglass with 55 total points and an average of 13.8 points per game. Scoblick is sitting in eighth in the conference while Douglass is at ninth in scoring. 

Carly Mulvaney is ranked second in the conference in rebounds with 41 on the season and is averaging 10.3 per game. Scoblick is ranked third in rebounds with 35 total and a 9.0 average per game.

Scoblick leads the team in shots from the field, with an average of 7.3 per game. Kerry Flaherty leads in three point field goals with an average shooting percentage of 7.8 per game, leaving her sitting at the top of the conference in three point field goals per game.
