Wilkes Hires Veith as New Men's and Women's Tennis Head Coach
WILKES-BARRE – On Monday afternoon, Wilkes University Athletic Director Scott Musa announced the hire of Scott Veith as the new head coach of the Wilkes men's and women's tennis programs.
A former football student-athlete at Wilkes, Veith returns as the eighteenth coach in men's and women's program history after six seasons as the head coach of Drew University's tennis programs.
"Wilkes has always been a special place for me and my family," Veith said. "It's where I started my collegiate athletics journey, where I met my wife, and where I learned how to be a coach from some great mentors."
"Wilkes has grown so much since I was a student-athlete. The campus and the academic programs have adapted with the times, and Wilkes is as attractive to top athletes now as it has ever been."
During his time with the Rangers, Veith was a six-time Landmark Conference coach of the year and five-time Landmark champion. He mentored student-athletes to five NCAA Tournament appearances, 53 All-Landmark selections, and 58 All-Landmark Academic selections.
Additionally, he holds accolades as the winningest coach in Drew and Landmark Conference history, and the only men's coach with 100 wins since the birth of the Landmark Conference.
"Scott has built multiple championship-winning programs, and as someone who spent four years as a Wilkes student-athlete, he knows what it takes to win at both Wilkes and in the Landmark Conference," said Musa.
"I am thrilled to welcome Scott home to Wilkes and look forward to supporting him as he returns our program to its championship roots."
Prior to his time with Drew, Veith was the head coach of FDU-Florham's tennis programs and is the school's all-time leader in total tennis coaching wins, playoff appearances, and playoff wins.
"I want to thank Drew University, the coaches, and the student-athletes I got to work with the past seven years," Veith reflected. "We had a special run."
"I'm excited to hit the ground running here at Wilkes. I'm thankful that the leaders here at Wilkes selected me for this position. We've got a great group in place now, and I'm working hard to find the right people to help us grow as individuals and as a team."
Veith begins his official duties as head coach on Monday, July 8.
"I'm inheriting a program that has seen great success over the past 20 years or so," Veith said. "I have the previous coaches to thank for that. My intention is to take the foundation we have in place and bring the program to new heights. "
"My teams and I had the great fortune to compete against some of the best teams in the country during my time at Drew. I have no doubt that we can get to that level here at Wilkes."
