Three Wilkes Wrestlers Place in Top Seven at Pete Willson Invitational: Butka Wins 197-Pound Title
 
WHEATON, IL – The Wilkes University men's wrestling team finished in 12th place at the Pete Willson Invitational with three wrestlers finishing in the top seven including 197-pound champion Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton).
 
The Colonels totaled 57.5 team points in the event. Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished first with 150.5 points while Wisconsin-Whitewater took home second.

Butka continued his stellar senior season with another tournament championship, his fourth tournament title of the year as he cruised through with three of five coming in extra-point fashion. He began day two with an 18-5 major decision over Casey Aikman of North Central (IL). Butka then claimed the championship with a 7-5 decision over No. 12 Gavin Layman of Ohio Northern in the finals. Butka moved his season record to 33-2 overall.
 
Caleb Burkhart (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) was the second top-seven finisher for Wilkes taking home fifth place at 285-pounds. Burkhart began day two with a 10-5 decision over Sloan Welch of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the consolation fourth round before back-to-back extra point wins with a fall (4:15) and technical fall (22-6) to reach the fifth place bout. He then pinned Steven Marra of Mount Union in 3:28 to finish off his tournament run through the consolation bracket.
 
Connor Kerwin (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley) was the final place winner for Wilkes at 125-pounds taking home seventh place. Kerwin fell in the consolation fifth round to Fred Luchs of Rhode Island College by fall before bouncing back with a comeback 12-11 decision win over Cameron Lee of Millikin University in the seventh place bout. Kerwin was trailing early in the match only to fight back and win with riding time.
 
Wilkes remains idle until next Saturday when the Colonels compete in the Messiah Open hosted by Messiah University starting at 10:00 a.m.
