Wilkes Women's Wrestling Readies for NCAA Region 1 Tournament this Weekend
 
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's wrestling team is gearing up for its first trip to the NCAA Region 1 Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the LECOM Event Center hosted by Elmira College.

The Colonels join 18 other schools at the regional event including Alfred State, Bridgeport, Buffalo State, Centenary, D'Youville, Elmira, Felician, Ithaca, Marine Maritime, Misericordia, New England College, New Jersey City, Norwich, Sacred Heart, Utica and Western New England.
 
Wilkes has shown promise up and down the lineup in its inaugural season as seven Colonels have recorded 10 or more wins on the year.
 
Gabriela Vasquez (San Antonio, TX/Conerstone Christian Schools) owns a 17-15 overall record at 103-pounds with top-four finishes at the East Stroudsburg Open, Golden Wolves Open and Will Abele Invite. Of her 17 wins, eight have come by fall and four by technical fall.
 
Grace Riley (Wood Ridge, NJ/Paramus Catholic) has been solid all season at 117-pounds posting an 18-15 overall mark including third place finishes at the Cougar Classic and Golden Wolves Open. She has a team-high eight technical falls and six falls. Haylee Robinson (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) holds down the 124-pound position with a 17-13 overall record with a second place finish at the Golden Wolves Open. Robinson has totaled a team-high 11 falls and three technical falls.
 
At 138-pounds Milly Hughes (Jefferson, GA/Jefferson) stands 15-10 with fourth place finishes at the Wilkes Open and Cougar Classic as well as second at the Golden Wolves Open. Thirteen of her wins have come with extra points including eight falls and five technical falls.
 
Other Colonels looking to make a run in the tournament include Angel Upright (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), Carina Rivera (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), Abbigale Bowman (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) and Kimberlee Hechler (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley).
 
The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament on March 6-7 in Coralville, Iowa.
