Three players scored in double-figures for Wilkes University with
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) leading the way with 20 points as the Lady Colonels took a 74-62 win over PSU-Hazleton. The win makes it two-straight for Wilkes and evens its win total from last season.
Gosse was 8-of-12 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds for the first double-double of the season for Wilkes.
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown), who poured in 33 points in the season opener, added 14, while
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had 11.
The Lady Colonels took advantage of their opportunities at the free throw line, hitting 21-of-30 freebies. The bulk of PSU-Hazleton's offense came from the outside, hitting 41.1 percent and making seven of the 10 free throws it attempted.
The Lady Lions led the first five minutes of the game, but Gosse gave Wilkes a 7-6 advantage with just over 15 minutes to play in the first. Catherine Beach quickly gave PSU-Hazleton the lead with a layup before both teams would exchange buckets.
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) gave the Lady Colonels the lead for good on a three-pointer with 13:01 to go before the half. It would be the only field goal of the night for Ely.
Wilkes used a 13-2 run to propel it to a 22-13 advantage with 7:37 to go when Gosse converted another layup. The Lady Lions had trouble putting the ball in the hoop as they scored just three points in just over seven minutes of action. By that time, Wilkes was cruising with a 35-16 lead, its largest of the half. The Lady Colonels would eventually go into the half with a 39-21 advantage, holding PSU-Hazleton to just 28 percent shooting.
The Lady Lions' shooting woes continued in the second half, scoring just four points in the first five minutes of action in the second half. A layup by
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) gave the Lady Colonels a 49-27 lead, their largest of the game. The cold spell would not stop their as Wilkes used a 10-2 run, capped off with a
Audriana Lippnik (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) free throw with 4:43 to play, giving the Lady Colonels a 67-42 lead.
PSU-Hazleton used a run of its own to pull within 14 with under a minute to play before Samantha Stevig hit a jumper as the buzzer sounded.
The Lady Colonels will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Selinsgrove to face Susquehanna at 7 p.m.
