SELLINSGROVE – The Lady Colonels women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season, falling 62-50 to Susquehanna in their second road game of the season.
Despite out-rebounding Susquehanna 46-35, 14 of which were pulled down by
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff), Wilkes could not overcome its cold shooting, hitting just 24 percent in the first half and 30.4 percent for the game.
It took over three minutes before either team was able to score before Rachael Hughes hit a jumper to give Susquehanna the early lead. Lyman would tie the game up at two with 16:33 to go in the first. Over three minutes later, the Lady Colonels made just one bucket and found themselves in a 10-4 deficit.
Erika Barron drained the back end of a pair of free throws to give Susquehanna a 21-11 advantage with 2:37 to play in the opening stanza. Barron's free throw capped off a 9-0 run giving SU its largest lead of the game. The Crusaders would eventually take a 23-13 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Colonels opened the second half by scoring just six points in the first three minutes, but Gosse pulled Wilkes within seven (28-21) with a jumper with 16:56 to go. She would finish with seven points on the night on 3-of-7 shooting.
A 13-4 run by Susquehanna over the next 4:56 gave it a 41-25 advantage, the Crusaders largest of the game. The Lady Colonels pulled within 11 twice the rest of the way, but would come no closer.
Susquehanna had two players score in double-figures with Jennifer Butts leading the way with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting. All but one player pulled down a rebound for Wilkes with
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) pulling down eight, while Lynam and
