Box Score
Wilkes University scored just nine points over the last eight minutes of the game but it didn't matter as it took a 57-47 win over Baptist Bible.
The win makes the Lady Colonels 3-1 on the year and has now surpassed their win total from last season.
Baptist Bible was down by as many as 16 in the second half, but pulled within three with 3:42 to go when Marlie Kneifel converted a layup. The score broke a nearly two minute scoring drought by both teams.
The Lady Colonels had two players score in double-figures with
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) leading the way with a game-high 15 points, while
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) had 12 points and was six-of-six from the free throw line. Horn was clutch down the stretch hitting four free throws with under a minute to play to help clinch the win.
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) put the Lady Colonels up for good after making a layup with 10:48 to go in the first, giving Wilkes a 9-8 advantage. Wilkes would use a 13-3 run to close out the half to lead 36-23 at the break.
The Lady Colonels hit 13-of-28 field goals in the first half for 46.4 percent, but hit just five field goals in the second, shooting just 26.3 percent. Lucky for Wilkes the Lady Defenders were unable to find the bucket either as they hit 27 percent from the floor. The only difference was that Baptist Bible was able to hit 10 field goals, including two three-pointers.
Wilkes held a double-digit lead until Kneifel hit a pair of free throws with 12:33 to go to pull Baptist Bible within nine (46-37). It would stay under 10 points the rest of the way until
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) made a layup with five seconds to play.
The Lady Colonels also survived 27 turnovers and were out-rebounded 46-40, but never lost their composure in the victory.
They will be back in action Tuesday when they host Marywood at 6 p.m. in the Marts Center.
