Box Score
Wilkes University made just 9-of-23 free throws, and shot under 40 percent, which proved to be the Lady Colonels Achilles heel as they fell to Marywood 60-51.
The Lady Colonels missed four-straight freebies over the last three minutes and scored just four points during that span. Neither team was able to put the ball through the basket down the stretch as the Pacers managed just five points over the last 3:41 of the game and made just two field goals in that stretch.
Marywood led for nearly the entire first half until
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) hit a 12-footer just outside the paint to give the Lady Colonels a 17-16 lead with 2:51 to go in the first. Wilkes would lead by as many as seven with 1:26 to play when
Erin Schneider (Reading, Pa./Holy Name), who scored a season-high 15 points, hit a pair of free throws. The Lady Colonels would eventually go into the locker room with a 25-19 lead.
It was a reversal of fortune in the second half as Wilkes led by as many as 10 (32-22) with 16:54 to go after a layup by
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), who finished with a team-high 18 points.
Marywood used a 10-2 run to pull within two with 12:59 to go and eventually tied the game at 41 with 9:08 to play when Stephanie Fusaro converted a layup. The Pacers would take the lead for good when Marielle Thorsen hit three of her game-high 19 points, giving them a 44-41 advantage they would not relinquish.
Wilkes never recovered, scoring just 11 points over the last 11:50 to play as it fell to 3-2 on the year. Marywood dominated the glass as it out-rebounded the Lady Colonels 46-37 despite 11 pull-downs from
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson). She picked up her first double-double of the season with 12 points to go along with her rebounding performance.
The Lady Colonels will be back in action next Wednesday when they head across town to face King's College in the Freedom Conference opener.
