Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) missed three of the first four shots she attempted, but came back to hit six of her next seven attempts for a game-high 22 points to lead Wilkes University to an 80-57 win over Keystone College. The win is the second-straight for the Lady Colonels and both have come by 20-or-more points.
Lynam was one of four Wilkes players to score in double-figures and all but two players that saw action scored at least two points. The win is the fifth of the year for the Lady Colonels, more than doubling last years victory total.
Wilkes trailed just once in the game after Ellen Fallon hit a 12-foot jumper in the first five seconds, but
Mackensey O'Hara (Otego, N.Y./Unatego) tied the game with a 15-footer while
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) gave the Lady Colonels the lead for good with 18:41 to play in the half with a jumper from the outside.
Both teams exchanged buckets over the next eight minutes before Wilkes used a 9-3 run to go up 31-20 with 6:43 to play in the half. The Giants would cut the lead to two (31-29) thanks to a 9-0 run. During that span, the Lady Colonels were held scoreless for nearly four minutes before Lynam drained her first of three three-pointers on the night with 3:04 to play in the first. Lynam's three would be the start of a 9-0 run to close out the half as Wilkes went into the locker room with a 40-29 lead at the break.
Yasmeen Bates hit the back end of a pair of free throws to bring the Giants within nine (40-31) with 18:29 to play, but it would be the last time Keystone would close the gap to single digits.
Keystone committed 29 turnovers that resulted in 31 points for Wilkes. The Lady Colonels shot 46.9 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Giants 36-32 and picked up 17 steals, six of which came from
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson).
The 80-point output for Wilkes matches a season-high after opening the season with an 80-72 win over Aracadia.
Wilkes will remain idle until Jan. 3 when it hosts DeSales University in a Freedom Conference matchup at 1 p.m. in the Marts Center.
