WILKES-BARRE – Chelsea Gosse put up a game-high 22 points while pulling down 11 rebounds to lead Wilkes, but it was not enough as King's had five players score in double-figures, which lifted it to a 71-58 Freedom Conference win.
On paper, the Lady Colonels did everything they needed to do to win like had a better shooting percentage, pulled down more rebounds and hit free throws, but what they didn't do was hold on to the ball, turning it over 26 times which proved to be the difference. “Obviously the turnovers hurt us today. You will not win many games turning the ball over that many times,” head coach Rachel Emmerthal said. “We didn't make smart passes; we tried to make long cross-court passes which didn't work.”
Wilkes shot 41.2 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the free throw line, but the Lady Monarchs made three more field goals in the game and hit seven three-point baskets to keep the Lady Colonels at bay.
King's never trailed in the game and opened a 17-8 lead with 12:54 to go thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Kaitlyn Fiorino and Kaitlyn Malshefski. The Lady Monarchs would eventually go on a 13-0 run, holding Wilkes scoreless for over four minutes to lead 31-12 with 8:17 to go in the first.
They would eventually lead 37-16 with just under five minutes to play in the first half before the Lady Colonels closed out the period with a 12-1 run to go into the locker room trailing 38-28.
Wilkes was unable to carry that momentum to the second half as it scored just one field goal in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half. By that time, King's rattled off 11-straight points to lead 51-30 with 15:00 to play.
The Lady Colonels were able to pull within 11 twice, but would come no closer as they fell to 3-3 on the year and 0-1 in Freedom Conference play.
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) was the only other Wilkes player to score in double-figures with 14 points, hitting 4-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-5 from the line.
