The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams are set to travel to Reading tomorrow to take on conference foe Alvernia University with scheduled tips coming at 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.
The Lady Colonels head into the contest with an 8-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Freedom Conference. Wilkes looks to rebound from a tough 61-57 loss at home on Wednesday night against Misericordia University in order to get their conference record back to the .500 plateau.
A trio of players are averaging double-digit scoring for the Lady Colonels, lead by
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown)'s 12.9 ppg. Right behind her is
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), who is pouring in 11.5 ppg and ranks second in the conference in free-throw percentage at 86.5 percent.
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) is adding 10.7 ppg and ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding grabbing 8.7 caroms per contest.
Alvernia heads into the match-up sporting a 7-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the conference. The Crusaders will look to extend their three-game winning streak, which included a 68-66 win over conference-leader and then No. 12 DeSales University last Saturday.
The Colonel men, who have won four-of-five, will look to remain atop the conference standings. Wilkes, who is 9-4 overall, is currently 5-1 in league play with their lone loss coming at the hands of FDU-Florham last Saturday by an 86-80 count.
The Colonels possess three of the top six scorers in the conference in Chris DeRojas, Tom Kresge, and Steve Kline. DeRojas ranks third in the league at 19.0 ppg and leads the Freedom by converting 84.4 percent of his free throws. Kresge ranks fifth in the conference at 16.7 ppg while also ranking third in rebounding with 8.3 rpg. Kline is right behind Kresge, popping in 16.2 ppg and grabbing 8.2 rpg, which are good for sixth and fourth in the league, respectively.
The Alvernia men have an overall record of 7-7 and a 4-2 mark in conference play. The Crusaders have currently won three-of-four, including an 86-79 victory over FDU-Florham on Wednesday.
