Box Score

READING – The Wilkes University women's basketball team shot just 34 percent and scored the second lowest point total this season as Alvernia took a 69-43 win over the Lady Colonels.

The loss is the second-straight for the Lady Colonels as they moved to 8-7 overall and 3-5 in Freedom Conference play. Freshman Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was the only Wilkes player to score in double-figures with 10 points while pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Along with their shooting slump, the Lady Colonels could not overcome 30 turnovers, which tied a season high and resulted in 24 points for the Crusaders. Alvernia didn't shoot much better, hitting 35.4 percent from the field, but the trio of Allison Toczylowski, Alexandra Velazquez and Kelli McIntyre combined for 42 of the team's 69 points with Velazquez putting in a game-high 17.

Alvernia jumped out to an early 15-4 lead midway through the first half after the Lady Colonels missed seven of their first nine shots. The Crusaders held a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 17 (31-14) with 1:47 to go before the half after Velazquez made a layup.

Wilkes was able to cut the lead to 14, trailing 34-20 at the break. It did however, start the second half with a 9-2 pulling the Lady Colonels within seven (36-29) after Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) made the back end of a pair of free throws.

The Crusaders used an 18-4 run, exploding to a 58-35 lead, their largest of the game. They would hold at least a 20-point advantage the rest of the way, improving to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in league play.

The Lady Colonels will be back in action Wednesday when they head to Williamsport to take on Lycoming at 6 p.m.
