ST. DAVID'S – Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) and
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) tallied double-doubles leading Wilkes to a 54-49 win over Eastern. The win snaps a three-game losing skid and marks the second time the Lady Colonels have defeated the Eagles this season.
Gosse put up a game-high 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds while Simcox had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Gosse knocked down seven of the team's 18 field goals and pulled down five of the team's 20 offensive rebounds, giving the Lady Colonels their ninth win of the season.
Wilkes took advantage of poor shooting by the Eagles as they hit just 30.8 percent from the field, including just 28.6 percent in the first half. Bekah Roland and Jeriah Garton combined to score 35 of Eastern's points, with Roland putting up 18.
Both teams had trouble scoring in the first half, scoring a combined 12 points (six points each) in the first 10 minutes. Roland gave the Eagles a 12-8 advantage, its largest of the half, after making a layup with 6:57 to go before the break. Both teams would exchange buckets until
Erin Schneider (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) made a layup with three seconds to go to give the Lady Colonels a 20-19 lead at the half.
Eastern opened the second half on an 8-2 run to lead 27-22, its largest of the game, with 17:22 to go. Wilkes took advantage of a five-minute scoring drought by Eastern and eventually used a 30-7 run to lead 52-34 with 2:31 to go after
Allison Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) drained the front end of a pair of free throws.
The Lady Colonels scored just one more bucket the rest of the way, but survived a 15-2 run by Eastern. The win improves Wilkes to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in league play. They will return to the Marts Center Wednesday when they host King's at 6 p.m. The game will benefit Breast Cancer Awareness as Wilkes is sponsoring “Pink Out”.
