For the first time in 11 years, the Lady Colonels defeated King's and did it in exciting fashion by winning 65-61 in double overtime. The win snaps a 23-game losing skid to their cross-town rival.
Freshman
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) poured in a career-high 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds leading the Lady Colonels to their second-straight win. Simcox nearly had a flawless game, hitting 9-of-12 shots from the field, including 10-11 from the free throw line.
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) made a layup between two King's defenders with 26 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 52. Wilkes battled back from a seven-point deficit with 2:45 to play, using a 9-2 run the rest of the way to force overtime. Gosse finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
King's led by as many as seven in the first half when Paige Carlin, who finished with five points, drained a three-pointer with 7:24 to go. The Lady Colonels would eventually take a 26-23 lead at the half, holding King's scoreless over the last 2:01 of the first period. Kaitlyn Fiorino, the team's leading scorer, had just five points in the first half, but caught fire the rest of the way, finishing with 26.
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) knocked down a three-pointer with 17:58 to go in regulation, giving Wilkes a 31-25 advantage, its largest of the second half. King's stormed back, using a 9-2 run to take a 36-35 lead with 11:51 to go after Fiorino made a layup. She would eventually hit a three-pointer, giving the Lady Monarchs a 39-37 lead with 11:27 to go. King's would hold the lead the rest of the way until Gosse's heroics tied the game for the seventh time with 26 seconds to go. Neither team would score the rest of the way, forcing overtime with the game tied at 52.
In the first overtime, Fiorino made five of the team's seven points, but
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) countered with four points of her own. Fiorino gave the Lady Monarchs a 59-54 lead after hitting a 15-footer 1:44 to go, but it would be the last time they would score in the first overtime.
Twenty-one seconds later, Ely knocked down a three-pointer bringing the Lady Colonels within two (59-57) before
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) made a layup with six seconds to go to tie the game at 59.
In the second overtime period, Simcox scored five of the team's six points as the Lady Colonels held King's to just two points – a pair of free throws by Brittany Muscatell, who finished with 10 points.
The win evens the Lady Colonels Freedom Conference record at 5-5 and are now 10-8 overall. They will be back in action Saturday when they host Delaware Valley at 1 p.m. in the Marts Center.
