Lizzy Sunderhaus and Kelly Oakes combined for 31 points and 38 rebounds to lead Cedar Crest to a 64-53 win over Wilkes University in the Lady Colonels' 2009-2010 home opener. Wilkes struggled from the field, hitting 28.2 percent from the field while the Falcons out-rebounded the Lady Colonels 61-45.
Cedar Crest jumped out to an 8-0 lead until
Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) put Wilkes on the board three minutes into the game. The Falcons led the entire first half until
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) made a layup and a free throw to give Wilkes a 25-23 advantage with 5:29 to go in the first. It would hold the lead the rest of the way, and went to the locker room with a 32-30 halftime advantage.
The Lady Colonels held the lead in the second half briefly before Sunderhaus put the Falcons up for good with a pair of free throws with 17:07 to go. The two teams would go back and forth until Wilkes hit a cold spell. With 9:23 to go, the Lady Colonels trailed 44-42 after a bucket by Wilkes'
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer), but they would score just two more points over the next five minutes. The two point advantage jumped to 10 with 4:23 to go and would lead by double-digits the rest of the way.
Sunderhaus finished with 16 points and 20 rebounds, while Oakes was nearly as impressive with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Four different Cedar Crest players finished in double figures, while only a total of six players scored at least one point in the contest.
Wilkes on the other hand was led by Connolly's 13 points, while Sam Lynam added 12.
Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) was the only other player on double-figures with 10. The loss dropped the Lady Colonels to 1-4 on the year.
