The Wilkes University women's basketball team hosted Freedom Conference rival Misericordia on Wednesday, ultimately falling by a final score of 67-54.
Wilkes came into the game with a 1-4 record, while the Cougars were 3-2 before the Freedom Conference opener.
The Lady Colonels came out firing, building a quick 8-2 lead less than four minutes into the game before Misericordia was forced to call a time-out. The Cougars would regroup after the time-out, hitting multiple three-point baskets en route to a 9-0 run and building a 19-14 lead with eight minutes left in the half. Misericordia would keep the hot hand, but two three-point buckets by Sam Lynam kept the Lady Colonels in the game, not allowing the Cougars to have more than a six point lead.
The two teams exchanged baskets during the second portion of the first half, and at the break the Cougars held a five point lead, 29-24.
Wilkes had three players who had six points in the half in
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose),
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) and Lynam, with Lynam hitting the only two three-pointers for the Lady Colonels and Kazmerski pulling down four rebounds. Wilkes shot 44% in the half, and held Misericordia to just over 31%. The Cougars hit four shots from long range in the period.
Wilkes started off the second half in good form, as 25 seconds into the period Kazmerski hit a three on a pass from
Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer), narrowing the Cougar lead to two points. Misericordia would answer though, breaking the Lady Colonel press for numerous lay-ups, extending their lead to nine points with 15 minutes left to play.
The Lady Colonels pulled the deficit to five with 10 minutes to go, but two quick baskets by the Cougars gave them a 51-41 led with 9:12 left to play. Misericordia would extend that lead to 15 points with less than five minutes left in the game, and the Lady Colonels would never recover, as the Cougars came out victors by a score of 67-54.
Wilkes was led by Kazmerski with 18 points and seven rebounds. Lynam chipped in 13 points of her own, while Ely finished with eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Cougars were led by Christine Marks with 15 points and 13 rebounds, including five of seven from the charity stripe.
With the loss the Lady Colonels fall to 1-5 (0-1) on the season, and will look to bounce back when they host conference foe FDU-Florham on Friday, Dec. 4. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
