DALLAS – The Wilkes University women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing skid with a 49-43 overtime win over Misericordia. The Lady Colonels came back from a seven-point halftime deficit and eventually outscored the Cougars 12-6 in the overtime period.
Despite making just two field goals in the extra frame, Wilkes made the most of its opportunities by draining eight free throws in overtime. The Lady Colonels also took advantage of cold shooting by Misericordia, which shot 25.4 percent from the field.
The inside duo of
Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) led the way for the Lady Colonels with 16 and 14 points respectively. Wilkes dominated the inside, scoring 28 of their 49 points inside the paint. Simcox recorded the game's only double-double with 12 rebounds as the Lady Colonels controlled the glass 51-34.
Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) made her only field goal of the night with 9:38 to go in the first half giving Wilkes a 14-7 advantage, its largest of the game. The Cougars would use a 7-0 run to tie the game at 14 when Christine Marks hit a pair of free throws with 7:28 to go before the half. Both teams would exchange buckets until Misericordia closed out the period with a 7-0 run over the final four minutes of the frame.
The Lady Colonels opened the second with a 13-2 run capped off with a
Chelsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) layup, giving Wilkes a 30-26 edge with just over 14 minutes to go. Neither team would score again until Lacey DeGraw made a free throw just over the seven minute mark.
Simcox would eventually give Wilkes a 37-33 lead with 2:46 to go, but it would be the last it would score in regulation. Jesse Robinson made a layup with 1:48 to go to tie the game at 37 forcing overtime.
In the extra stanza, Chelsey put Wilkes up by two with a layup with 3:18 to go before Simcox made a pair of free throws. While the Lady Colonels sealed the game at the free throw line, Misericordia did not shoot a free throw in the overtime period.
The win moves Wilkes to 11-13 overall and 6-10 in Freedom Conference play. The Lady Colonels will close out the regular season Friday in the Marts Center when they host Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m.
