WINCHESTER, Va. – The Wilkes University Lacrosse team opened the 2009 season in fine fashion, taking a 16-8 road victory over Shenandoah. The trio of Amelia Farnham,
Brittney Hodnik (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) and Melissa Polchinksi each put in four goals to lead the way for the Lady Colonels.
Both teams started out slow in the first period with Wilkes taking a 5-3 advantage at the break. Farnham put the Lady Colonels on the board first at the 27 minute mark with an unassisted goal before Shenandoah scored back-to-back goals within three seconds.
Carissa Clark (Petersburg, N.J./Ocean City) would tie the game at two on a free position shot with 19 minutes to go in the first.
Farnham scored her second goal of the day at the nine minute mark before Polchinksi gave the Lady Colonels the lead for good with a goal at the 6:10 mark with an assist from Hodnik.
The second half saw the Lady Colonels erupt for 11 goals, six of which came in the first 10 minutes of action. Seven different players scored for Wilkes, which improved to 1-0 on the year.
Wilkes had 35 total shots, 23 of which were on goal, while Shenandoah had 29 shots, 18 of which were on goal. Goalkeeper
Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) tallied the win, starting the first 30 minutes before she was relieved by
Allie Zukunft (Hamden, Conn./The Gunnery).
The Lady Colonels will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face Division I foe Howard.
