SCRANTON – Wilkes catcher
Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ) hit two home runs and drove in four runs, while designated hitter
Andrew Garofoli (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) went 3-for-6 with five RBI and four runs scored as the Colonels outlasted Scranton 19-16. The Colonels have now won 10-straight and improved to 13-4 on the year.
When the Colonels scored, they scored in bunches, plating at least two runs in five of the nine innings, including a six-run outburst in the third. Eighteen players saw action in the non-conference contest, nine of which reached safely with a hit. Five different players picked up two-or-more hits with Garofoli and Dengler picking up nine of the team's 19 hits.
The Colonels opened with a three-run first inning before Scranton would answer with two in the bottom half of the frame. Wilkes would score three more in the second innings, thanks to a three-run blast by Garofoli, who now hit safely in six consecutive games.
A six-run third gave the Colonels a 12-2 advantage, a lead they would not lose the rest of the way. Wilkes had five hits in the inning, three of which were doubles. The Colonels finished the game with 11 extra base hits on the game.
The Royals had a big inning of their own, plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within four (12-8).
A two-run fifth and five-run seventh was just enough to hold off a late comeback by Scranton, which scored three in the seventh and eighth, a run in the ninth and left two runners on in the final frame.
Five different pitchers saw action for the Colonels with
Mark Siebel (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) picking up his first win of the season. He allowed four runs off six hits in two innings of work and struck out two. Four of the five pitchers gave up four runs each, while
Mike Brennan (New Ringgold, Pa./Marian Catholic) came in relief in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Wilkes will try to keep its win streak in tact Friday when the Colonels host Misericordia at 3:30 p.m. in Kingston.
