game one game two
It is now 14 wins in their last 15 games for the Wilkes University baseball team, which took an impressive two-game sweep over DeSales, winning the first game 7-3 and the second 14-8.
The two wins puts the Colonels at 4-1 in Freedom Conference play and 17-5 overall. Freshman starter
Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) was impressive in the first game, going eight and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs in just 91 pitches. Freshman
Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) threw just one pitch in garnering his third save of the season.
The Colonels had nine extra-base hits on the day, including two home runs and a triple by
Andrew Garofoli (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) in the second game. Garofoli's triple could have been an inside-the-park home run, but head coach Joe Folek held him up at third base. He finished the second game by going 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored.
In the first game, DeSales struck first with a run in the first on an infield single by Greg Treat, driving in Mike Bianca, who led off the inning with a single. Wilkes would answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run single by
Eric Wetzel (New Berlin, N.J./Mifflinburg) who finished with two hits in the game.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw
Geoff Miller (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) hit a triple to the gap in right field followed by a single up the middle by
Tom Buckler (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) to give the Colonels a 3-1 advantage. Miller finished with three of the team's 12 hits and scored three runs.
Clocker would come up big in the fifth inning with a two-run single through the left side plating Miller and
Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ).
John Florance (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) iced the game after scoring from third on a failed pickoff attempt on Wetzel who reached on a bunt single. Florance pinch ran for
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale), who led off the inning with a double.
The second game saw the Bulldogs commit four errors that led to five unearned runs and none proved more costly than a throwing error in the fourth inning that saw the Colonels score five times.
Six different players picked up multi-hit games in the nightcap with Garofoli and Watson each tallying three. Wilkes scored at least one run in all but the seventh and eighth innings and led 13-1 at one point.
Buckler picked up the win in the second game and improved to 7-1 on the year. He gave up four runs off eight hits while striking out seven.
The Bulldogs fell to 13-11 overall and 3-4 in Freedom Conference play. The Colonels are scheduled to play Manhattanville at 3:30 tomorrow at Artillery Park.
