READING – The Wilkes University baseball team snapped a two-game losing skid by taking a 6-4 win over PSU Berks in 10 innings. The contest was the first since last Saturday and served as a tune up as they Colonels are awaiting a possible bid to participate in the ECAC Championships.
The win improved Wilkes to 29-11 overall while PSU Berks, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning their league, fell to 21-21-1 overall.
The Colonels broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the 10th when
Shane Keister (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West) hit an RBI single to plate
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale), who led off the inning with a single.
Trevin Jaggars (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) would later pinch run for Keister and would come around to score on a double by
Eric Wetzel (New Berlin, N.J./Mifflinburg).
Wilkes pounded out 13 hits in the win including four for extra bases. Wetzel picked up two on his own with a double and a triple.
Matt Ruch (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer ) went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI while Keister picked up a pair of hits as well.
Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ) put the Colonels on the board first with a two-run double, scoring Ruch and
Geoff Miller (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) in the top of the first inning. Ruch led off the frame with a single before Miller reached on an error before
Andy Garofoli (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt.
PSU Berks cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on an RBI single before Wilkes added two more runs in the second. Wetzel started the rally with a one-out triple before Ruch doubled him home. Ruch would later come around to score on an RBI single by Garofoli.
PSU Berks tied the game at two in the bottom of the third and the score would remain that way until the Colonels put up two runs in the 10th.
Starter
Justin Huff (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) went four innings where he gave up three runs off four hits and struck out one, while
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West) and
Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) combined to toss five innings.
Mike Brennan (New Ringgold, Pa./Marian Catholic) picked up the win after pitching the final inning where he gave up one hit without a run.
