The Wilkes University women's basketball team hosted conference foe Eastern on Wednesday, defeating the Eagles and capturing its first Freedom Conference victory, 58-50.
The Lady Colonels took an early lead on baskets by Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) and Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty), and didn't let the Eagles score till nearly four minutes into the game. Each team struggled from the field early and halfway through the first period the score was tied at 10.
The teams exchanged baskets, but a three-pointer and soon after lay up by Sam Lynam put the Lady Colonels up 21-15 with four minutes left in the half. Wilkes added another basket on a steal by Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose), but the Eagles added four points to make the score 23-19 at the break.
Lynam gave the Lady Colonels a big spark off the bench, scoring 11 points on four of nine shooting in 11 minutes. Gosse had four points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the first frame.
The second half began with a 6-0 run by Wilkes to bring its lead to 10. The Eagles quickly responded with a seven point run of their own, and after a Lynam free throw Wilkes had a 30-26 lead three minutes into the half. Eastern worked its way back into the game, but a three-pointer by Lyndsay Ellis (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) gave the Lady Colonels a seven point lead and some breathing room with over 12 minutes left in the game.
One minute later the Lady Colonels took an 11 points lead after a lay up by Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer). Wilkes would sustain that lead the rest of the contest, leading by seven with a minute left, and ultimately winning 58-50.
Wilkes was led by Lynam, who ended up with 17 points in 21 minutes. Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) notched another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Kazmerski also had 11 points and two steals.
With the win Wilkes improves to 3-11 (1-3) on the season, and will try to take its momentum into its next contest against King's College. That game is on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1:00 at King's College.
