The Wilkes University women's basketball team hosted Freedom Conference opponent Delaware Valley on Saturday afternoon, looking to break a two game road skid. The Lady Colonels started off strong, but the perimeter game of the Aggies was too much as Wilkes fell by a score of 71-57.
The Lady Colonels started off on fire, hitting their first three shots and stealing two passes to grab a quick 7-2 lead, with
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) scoring an early five points. The Aggies responded quickly though, and four minutes into the game a 9-0 Delaware Valley run had Wilkes down 11-7, forcing a timeout.
The pace of the game settled down after early fireworks, and with 10 minutes left to play in the half Delaware Valley had established a 10 point lead. The Aggies connected on shots throughout the rest of the half, but Wilkes never let the game get out of reach, as
Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT/Holy Name) came in to score seven quick points, including a long three-point basket.
Late in the half Wilkes cut the deficit to six on two
Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) free throws, but Delaware Valley ended the period on a 6-0 run, making the score 38-26 at the break.
The Lady Colonels were led by Kazmerski who had 12 points and four rebounds in the half, while Gosse pulled down seven rebounds of her own. Wilkes shot 30 percent from the field in the period, and the Aggies shot just under 46 percent.
The beginning of the second half saw multiple fouls committed by both teams, as well as many trips to the free throw line. Through all the clock-stopping, Wilkes was still unable to chip away at the deficit, and with 13:19 left to play the Aggies held a 13 points lead, 46-33.
Over the next few minutes Wilkes hit on consecutive shots, but the three-point shooting of Delaware Valley didn't allow the Lady Colonels to bring the deficit to within 10 points. With 5:32 the Aggies hit another three, making the score 64-45 and giving Wilkes its biggest deficit of the game. Delaware Vally cruised the rest of the way, winning by a score of 71-57.
The Lady Colonels were led by
Lindsey Gosse (Allentown, Pa./Allen) with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Kazmerski also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Wilkes shot only 28 percent from the field in the game, while the Aggies shot over 40 percent, including hitting on eight three-point buckets.
Wilkes will have an opportunity to turn things around when they host Lycoming on Wednesday, Jan. 27. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
