WILKES-BARRE –
Katie Cocchi (Morris Plains, NJ, Parsipany Hills) scored an early goal in the first period to help Wilkes grab its second Freedom Conference victory over DeSales on Wednesday night. The victory makes Wilkes 5-1 at home this year.
Wilkes was the first to get things started in the game, putting constant pressure on the DeSales defense with multiple fast breaks. Finally,
Katie Cocchi (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsipany Hills) scored on a breakaway after dribbling past the goalie and scoring on a difficult shot from the left side. For the rest of the period the two teams played to a stalemate with Wilkes up at the break, 1-0.
Wilkes had just three shots in the half, but held DeSales to just two shots.
In the second half Wilkes stood strong against several DeSales surges offensively, and threatened to score itself a different times in the period. In the end the Lady Colonels defense held up, pulling out the win, 1-0.
Cocchi had the lone score in the contest, while
Samantha Rohn (Levittown, Neshaminy) had five saves.
The Lady Colonels will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they take on FDU-Florham in Madison, N.J. That game will begin at 2:00 p.m.
